SPACE GROWS OUT OF NECESSITY

Project 1

The marble and the dice, motion versus stasis, organic and geometric, the womb and the box.
The first architectural experience is the womb. There, space, in abstract geometric terms can be reduced to the sphere inside which the body spins around moving freely in a constrained universe.
For most people in “civilized” societies the second spatial experience is the box, the four wall, floor, ceiling environment where a group of people come together to bring you into this world.
Likewise this can be reduced to a cubic environment where you start interacting on somewhat equal terms with others.
The 1st IADDD project borrows concepts from these 2 primal experiences, bearing in mind the recurring preoccupation in various cultures to relate the human body to the circle and square
(best materialized in da Vinci’s drawing).

TITLE: BODY IN GEOMETRY

DESCRIPTION:
Taking inspiration from Leonardo’s drawing relating the human figure to the circle and square, create 2 environments for the human body in action, one included in a sphere and the other in a cube. Use form*Z.

Part 1: Body.
Create an articulated doll in f*z to figure as inhabitant of your spaces. Take measurements from actual people. Measures should be realistic but outlook can be symbolical.

Part 2: Sphere, subtraction.
1. This sphere is like a cocoon, a fruit inhabited by a worm, a seed, a vessel taking one human being to any environment for any period of time. It may go to space with no gravity or to the bottom of the sea, it may roll like a snowball from the top of a mountain or float randomly on the water surface. Its sole inhabitant must be able to rest, eat, think and run inside it.
Put aside the problems of sewage and where food and air supply come from.
2. This space must be created by material subtraction from the sphere. Outside diameter is 3 m. There must be communication with the exterior through one opening. Remaining wall thickness should not be less than 0.1 m.

Part 3: Cube, addition.
1. In a cubic space 3x3x3 m create an environment for 2 people’s interaction. Interior space will be enclosed by addition of material elements such as walls, columns and volumes. This cube can be used in 6 different positions, resting on each of its 6 faces.
2. Design your space in a way that each position serves a distinct concept of human interaction: exercise, secrecy, intimacy, separation, conflict, conversation.
3. Wall thickness should be at least 0.05 m. Space should be mostly closed to the outside, though some openings are acceptable. In each position one side of the cube becomes the ground plane.

PRESENTATION:
Next week you will present your work to the class.
It’s very important that your pro ject be presented in a clear, easy to understand and neat way.
You can apply to your presentation some of the rules of Modernism such as “ORNAMENT IS CRIME”, “LESS IS MORE”, “FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION”, etc. This means putting there ALL the information needed for a total understanding of your solution and NOTHING more.
Although you can apply materials to your pieces it will help visualization if you make them semitransparent in most views.

SPHERE:
You need to show your sphere with the traveler in several body positions: sitting, walking or running, lying down, arms and legs extended (like in Leonardo’s drawing). You should do this in three ways:
1. Views in transparency,
2. Sections, like in an open orange,
3. Animation around the sphere for at least one position.
It’s very important that the traveler be there at all times.

CUBE
Your cube is like a stage for 6 different scenes. You need to show EACH SCENE in a way that any viewer can easily understand. Again transparency, sections and 3D views (perspective, isometry, axonometry) at the proper angles, are the best way to do this. Naturally your two inhabitants should be there all the time for the situations to be understood.

MEDIA
Present your project in an A3 book format. Pages inside can be soft paper but front and back covers should be hard.
Add subtitles and your written idea to the graphics.
Animation of the sphere should be exported to Director.
USE ONLY INFORMATION AND NOT DECORATION!!!!!!!
